In computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and animals.
A computer will solve problems in exactly the way it is programmed to, without regard to efficiency, alternative solutions, possible shortcuts, or possible errors in the code. Computer programs that learn and adapt are part of the emerging field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Artificial intelligence based products generally fall into two major categories :
- Rule Based Systems, is used to store and manipulate knowledge to interpret information in a useful way. It attempt to represent the rules used by human experts and tend to be expensive to develop.
- Pattern Recognition Systems, is the automated recognition of patterns and regularities in data. It uses data about a problem to generate conclusions. It has applications in statistical data analysis, signal processing, image analysis, information retrieval, bioinformatics, data compression, computer graphics and machine learning.
