A computer is a machine that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming.
Computer has no full form but some people even say that it stands for "Common Operating Machine Purposely Used for Technological and Educational Research" .
The verb “compute” comes from Latin and is combined of “Com” (with) and “Putare” (reckon). The compound word, Computare, refers to a reckoning of arithmetic, or perhaps to “settle an account.” And computer is derived from Computare.
Modern computers have the ability to follow specific sets of operations written by a programmer, called programs.
A computer system
A modern computer
- includes at least one processing element, typically a central processing unit (CPU)
- includes computer memory for storing information

- includes output devices (monitors, printers, etc)
- or both input/output devices that perform both functions (touchscreen etc).
If we connect a group of computers, then it is called a computer network or computer cluster
Common Usage
Computers are used as control and management systems for a wide variety of industrial and consumer devices. This includes simple special purpose devices like microwave ovens and remote controls, factory devices such as industrial robots and computer-aided design, and also general purpose devices like personal computers and mobile devices such as smartphones. The Internet is run on computers and it connects hundreds of millions of other computers and their users.
